To begin with, the main producers of clone golf clubs are true golf companies in their own rights. Their own design departments create club designs that are manufactured using the same materials as the big OEM's. These golf clubs incorporate the same design features such as club volume, increased MOI and cavity backs, to name just a few.
Club design is dictated by the rules laid down by the game's governing bodies. Club heads have to abide by these confines, otherwise they are considered non-conforming and prohibited for use in competitive play. That's not limited to the pro tours either. Bagging a non-conforming driver in your next club match may well see you being disqualified.
The major producers of golf clones will submit their clubs to the game's governing bodies for approval (USPGA in the USA, R&A in Europe) in the same fashion as the main OEM's. This takes time, resources and is very expensive so nobody selling cheapo fakes would go to the expense and effort of submitting their clubs, only to see them turned down.
Take titanium drivers for example. The maximum volume allowed under the rules of golf is 460 cc for the club to be conforming. It's not sufficient for a producer to claim their drivers are under 460 cc. The USPGA and the R&A have to confirm they aren't. If they are under the limit, they are listed on the Conforming Driver lists. If they do measure over the 460 cc limit, they are listed on the Non-Conforming Driver lists.
Quick point to note here. Some makers of second-rate knock-offs trumpet their drivers as being conforming by stating their clubs are not on the non-conforming lists. All that translates to is that they haven't been submitted for testing. Conforming drivers go on the conforming list. Just because a drivers is on the conforming list, it isn't necessarily conforming.
Designing and creating conforming clubs takes a lot of skill and attention to details. The limits placed by the rules are very strict and it only takes a tiny manufacturing discrepancy to end up with non-conforming clubs. Size isn't the lone design element limited by the rules. With restrictions on club-face rebound for instance (Coefficient of Restitution) being affected by even the tiniest variant in thickness of the driver face, tight controls in the manufacturing process is vital.
Golf clones from respected companies built according to the rules of golf and will be a lot easier on your wallet. Using the same quality materials as the big golf companies and with the same (or better) golf shafts, these are top quality golf clubs that will make golf that much more satisfying. As an added benefit, many of the top line manufacturers offer their clubs with custom fit options.
What you end up playing is a set of premium, conforming, custom assembled clubs that will perform as good as, if not better, than those costly off-the-rack OEM's. And all that without the price tags.
Never a bad thing for a set of custom golf clubs.
The Benefits Of Custom Clone Golf Clubs
There's a popular misconception about clone golf clubs. Many see these as cheap copies of brands like Callaway and Nike. That might be true in some cases, but a set of quality golf clones will play every bit as good as those expensive OEM's you see in the pro shops.
